Do I need to create an account?

No! Mixtape Society requires no account, signup, or personal information.

Just:

  1. Click the link
  2. Press play
  3. Enjoy!

Do I need to download an app?

No app needed. Mixtapes play directly in your web browser.

Works in:

  • Safari (iPhone, iPad, Mac)
  • Chrome (Android, Windows, Mac)
  • Firefox
  • Edge
  • Any modern browser

Does it work on my phone?

Yes! Works on all modern smartphones:

Is it free?

Yes, completely free for recipients.

No costs for:

  • Listening to mixtapes
  • Accessing shared links
  • Using the player
  • Casting to devices

Note: The creator may have server costs, but that doesn't affect you.


Common issues:

Link was truncated:

  • Copy and paste the full URL
  • Check for line breaks in messages
  • Ask sender to resend

Browser issues:

  • Try different browser
  • Update your browser
  • Clear browser cache
  • Disable extensions temporarily

Server issues:

  • Creator's server might be down
  • Check with the person who sent it

Link was deleted:

  • Creator may have removed the mixtape
  • Ask them to share again

Can I save the mixtape?

You can:

  • ✅ Bookmark the link
  • ✅ Add to home screen (mobile)
  • ✅ Save the URL anywhere
  • ✅ Listen as many times as you want

You cannot:

  • ❌ Download the audio files
  • ❌ Play offline (needs internet)
  • ❌ Export to Spotify/Apple Music

Why? Protects the creator's music library and respects copyright.

Links are permanent unless:

  • Creator deletes the mixtape
  • Creator's server goes offline

Otherwise:

  • Link never expires
  • Works indefinitely
  • Can revisit anytime

Technically yes, but consider:

Check with the creator first:

  • It might be a personal gift
  • They may prefer to share directly
  • Respect their privacy intentions

If you do share:

  • Link works for anyone
  • Creator won't know who's listening
  • Use private channels

Better option:

  • Thank the creator
  • Ask them to share with your friend too
  • Respect the personal nature of mixtapes

🎵 Playback & Features

Why isn't there a download button?

By design. Mixtapes are for streaming only.

Reasons:

  • Protects creator's music library
  • Respects copyright
  • Keeps files on secure server
  • Prevents unauthorized distribution

You can:

  • Listen unlimited times
  • Bookmark for easy access
  • Cast to better speakers
  • Control quality settings

Can I listen offline?

Currently, no. You need an internet connection to stream.

Future possibilities:

  • Offline mode may be added later
  • Would require creator permission
  • Not available yet

For now:

  • Use WiFi when possible
  • Choose lower quality to save data
  • Download music legally from other sources

How much data does streaming use?

Per song (approximate):

Quality Per Song Per Hour
Original ~10MB ~150MB
High (256k) ~7MB ~105MB
Medium (192k) ~5MB ~75MB
Low (128k) ~3MB ~45MB

Default: Medium quality (good balance)

Tips:

  • Use WiFi when available
  • Switch to Low on cellular
  • Monitor your data usage
  • Consider unlimited data plan

Why does playback keep stopping?

Common causes:

Slow connection:

  • Switch to lower quality
  • Move closer to WiFi router
  • Close other apps using internet
  • Pause and let it buffer

Browser issues:

  • Refresh the page
  • Clear browser cache
  • Update browser
  • Try different browser

Device issues:

  • Close other apps
  • Free up RAM
  • Restart your device
  • Check available storage

Server issues:

  • Creator's server might be slow
  • Many people listening at once
  • Contact creator about issues

Can I adjust the volume?

Yes! Multiple volume controls:

In the player:

  • Use the volume slider
  • Click speaker icon to mute/unmute

On your device:

  • Use device volume buttons
  • System volume controls

When casting:

  • Control volume on the cast device
  • Or use the app's cast volume

Note: Player volume and device volume work together—both affect final output.

Which browser works best on iPhone?

How do I add it to my home screen?

iPhone/iPad (Safari):

Android (Chrome):

  1. Tap menu (three dots)

Can I use it in my car?

Can I use AirPlay?

Yes! For iPhone, iPad, and Mac users:

Requirements:

  • Must use Safari browser (not Chrome)
  • Apple TV, HomePod, or AirPlay 2 speakers
  • Same WiFi network

Can I use Chromecast?

Yes! For Android, Chrome, and Windows:

Requirements:

  • Chromecast device
  • Chrome, Edge, or Opera browser
  • Same WiFi network

How to use:

Why isn't AirPlay working?

Common issues:

Wrong browser:

  • Must use Safari on iOS/Mac
  • Chrome doesn't support AirPlay
  • Switch to Safari

Not on same network:

  • Phone and Apple TV need same WiFi
  • Check WiFi settings
  • Restart router if needed

AirPlay disabled:

  • Check Apple TV settings
  • Enable AirPlay
  • Update Apple TV software

Device issues:

  • Restart iPhone/iPad
  • Restart Apple TV
  • Update iOS/tvOS

Can multiple people control playback?

Depends on casting method:

Chromecast:

  • ✅ Anyone on same WiFi can control
  • ✅ See what's playing
  • ✅ Change tracks or volume

AirPlay:

  • ❌ Only device that started AirPlay
  • Control from that device only
  • Others need to stop and start their own

Direct playback:

  • Only person with the browser open
  • Not shared control

What do all the buttons do?

Basic controls:

  • ▶️ Play/Pause - Start/stop playback
  • ⏭️ Next - Skip to next track
  • ⏮️ Previous - Go to previous track
  • 🔊 Volume - Adjust loudness

Advanced features:

  • 🔀 Shuffle - Random track order
  • 🔁 Repeat - Loop all or single track
  • 📊 Quality - Change audio quality

How do I change the quality?

To adjust quality:

  1. Look for ⚙️ Settings or Quality button
  2. Tap to open menu
  3. Select your preferred quality
  4. Current track restarts at new quality

When to use each:

  • Original/High - On WiFi, best sound
  • Medium - Default, balanced
  • Low - Mobile data, slow connections

Can I see the lyrics?

Currently, no. Lyrics are not supported.

You can:

  • Search for lyrics separately
  • Use genius.com or other sites
  • Check liner notes for context

Future feature: Lyrics display may be added later.

What are liner notes?

Personal messages from the creator explaining:

  • Why they made the mixtape
  • What songs mean to them
  • Context for track choices
  • Dedications or messages

Where to find them:

  • Gift links show them on landing page
  • Direct links may have expandable section
  • Not all mixtapes have liner notes

Track references:

  • 1 = First track

  • 5 = Fifth track

  • 1-3 = First three tracks


🔒 Privacy & Safety

Is my listening tracked?

No tracking. Mixtape Society doesn't monitor:

  • Who listens
  • When you listen
  • How many times
  • Which tracks you play

Complete privacy for recipients.

Do I need to worry about viruses?

No. Mixtapes are audio streams, not downloads.

Safe because:

  • No files downloaded to your device
  • Streaming only
  • No executable code
  • No browser extensions required

Standard web safety:

  • Use updated browser
  • Don't click suspicious links
  • Verify sender before opening

Can the creator see my information?

No. The creator cannot see:

  • Your IP address
  • Your location
  • Your device information
  • When you listened
  • Who else you shared with

Total privacy - it's anonymous listening.


⚠️ Troubleshooting

The player looks broken or glitchy

Solutions:

Update browser:

Check browser settings → About
Update to latest version

Clear cache:

  1. Browser settings
  2. Clear browsing data
  3. Reload mixtape

Try different browser:

  • Download Chrome or Firefox
  • Test in that browser

Disable extensions:

  • Ad blockers might interfere
  • Try incognito/private mode

I hear crackling or distortion

Audio quality:

  • Try different quality setting
  • Higher might fix digital issues
  • Lower might fix buffering

Connection:

  • Slow internet causes artifacts
  • Switch to lower quality
  • Use WiFi instead of cellular

Device:

  • Check headphone connection
  • Try different headphones
  • Restart your device

File issue:

  • Might be the source file
  • Contact creator
  • Try other tracks

Controls aren't responding

Try:

  1. Refresh the page
  2. Close and reopen tab
  3. Restart browser
  4. Restart device
  5. Try different browser

Check:

  • JavaScript is enabled
  • No browser errors (F12 console)
  • Browser is updated

Battery drains quickly

Why this happens:

  • Streaming uses network constantly
  • Screen might stay on
  • Processing audio

To improve:

  • Lower quality setting
  • Close other apps
  • Reduce screen brightness
  • Use battery saver mode
  • Plug in while listening

Can I make my own mixtapes?

As a recipient, no. You'd need:

  • Your own music library
  • A server to run Mixtape Society
  • Technical setup knowledge

Your options:

  1. Ask the creator for access to their server
  2. Set up your own server
  3. Use other services for playlists
